A shopfitter builds a shop, cafe, kiosk or clinic from the designer's drawings, and many also make the counters, display units and back-of-house joinery in their own factory. That factory is often the real difference between them: it decides finish quality, lead times and how easily a store can be repeated.
This directory lists 14 shopfitters based in Melbourne, grouped by the kind of job they show most often.
How this list was made: FORJ wrote it, and FORJ designs shops and venues but does not build them, so FORJ is not on it. Shopfitters are grouped by the work they show, alphabetical within each group, with no ranking and no paid entries. Details come from each business's own website in October 2026. One disclosure: Sam Fossati, who leads FORJ's interior design, was Design Manager at Canopy Fitouts until early 2025. Its entry is marked ‡.
If your store is in a shopping centre
Centre landlords approve the design and the shopfitter, and both take time. Vicinity's fitout guidelines set out the sequence: concept design review, preliminary drawings, lease approval, a review of any works to the centre's services, final design approval, then shopfitter appointment, authority approvals and handover of the site.
Region Group's design and fitout guide adds that only "qualified, experienced commercial shopfitters or contractors are permitted", that the landlord "has the right to refuse a shopfitter", and that every worker must be inducted to the site. Centre guidelines often restrict noisy work to outside trading hours; QIC's guidelines for one of its centres require exactly that.
Two things follow. Ask each shopfitter which centres they have worked in recently, and allow for the approval steps in your opening date rather than squeezing the build.
Questions worth asking a shopfitter
- Is the joinery made in your own factory? Where, and what is the current lead time?
- Which centres or landlords have you built in recently?
- Who coordinates the centre's approvals, inductions and hoarding?
- What does your price exclude: signage, equipment, services upgrades, after-hours work?
- If this format works, could you repeat it in another site?
